Our Services:
To facilitate learning in a natural context, services are provided in a familiar environment including home, childcare center, or community setting. Services begin with an initial consultation and evaluation. Following the evaluation, you will receive a report and treatment plan including recommended therapeutic services.
If a recent evaluation or current IEP is in place, therapy may be able to begin immediately after consultation.
Now accepting clients in Fort Mill and surrounding areas including Rock Hill, Indian Land, and South Charlotte.
AAC Evaluation
An Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) evaluation assesses a client’s communication needs and skills. This may include direct observations and input from caregivers.
The evaluation also includes consideration for physical, cognitive, and sensory abilities to help determine the most appropriate AAC system to enhance the client’s communication abilities.
AAC Therapy
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) therapy includes various methods and tools for self-expression which require time, dedication, and expertise from knowledgeable therapists. Integrating AAC requires patience and commitment but can significantly improve the client’s quality of life.
At Ascent Speech Therapy, we help to guide clients and their families in learning and adapting to new communication systems. Our continuous support helps clients to enhance their communication skills, foster connections, and participate in daily activities.
Natural Language Aquisition
Gestalt Language Processing is an approach to language acquisition where children communicate using whole phrases or scripts, rather than building language from single words.
Traditional language therapy may not support GLPs effectively. At Ascent Speech Therapy, we provide specialized treatment plans tailored to their unique language development needs.
You may observe signs that indicate your child is a GLP, such as:
Using echolalic phrases (repeating back phrases they have heard verbatim, often in the same context they were learned)
Struggling with generating spontaneous novel language and answering questions
Speech Sound Disorders
Therapy for speech sound disorders focuses on different evidence-based methods, dependent upon the cause of the errors, which can include:
Motor Speech: addressing difficulties with the physical ability to produce speech sounds correctly
Phonological Processing: addressing difficulties in recognizing and using the sound patterns of a language
Articulation Disorders: targeting issues related to the misarticulation of sounds, such as substitutions, omissions, or distortions
Early Intervention
Speech therapy for early intervention focuses on enhancing communication skills in young children in natural and engaging activities. Common interventions include:
Play-Based Therapy: Child-led play activities to encourage natural communication. This includes using toys and games to promote interaction and vocabulary development.
Parent Involvement: Equipping parents with strategies to stimulate language at home.
Multi-sensory Approaches: Engaging multiple senses during therapy, like incorporating movement or tactile experiences which can enhance learning and retention.
Parent/Adult Services
Parent and caregiver training in speech therapy is vital for increasing effective communication skills. This training allows caregivers to reinforce techniques from therapy sessions which helps with generalization of skills in varied contexts. Involvement of parents and caregivers fosters collaboration, boosting motivation and progress.
Additional Adult Training and Consultation Services available includes:
IEP guidance and/or attendance
Multidisciplinary collaboration/training
Evaluation and therapy for adults with developmental disabilities requiring AAC.
